Common Street Names for Marijuana

There are so many common street names for marijuana that at times it seems far removed from “cannabis” its botanical name.  The names can vary significantly from city to city, region to region and country to country. Still, there are several names for marijuana that are universal such as weed and pot.  Some say the deluge of code names for marijuana was initiated as a means of diverting police attention to evade tough legal penalties for those distributing, possessing or using this drug. Others who are more convinced that secrecy is no longer an issue suggest any new name for marijuana is strictly a linguistic preference.
In the United States common street names for marijuana include:

  • Bud

As far as marijuana is concerned the list of names is almost inexhaustible and new ones are always emerging that reflect changes demographic, cultural norms and attitudes.  In addition, there are two specific classifications of marijuana which are “Indica” and “sativa”, and various strains of that fit into one of these categories.  It is not uncommon for cannabis farmers to cross strains in order to influence the growing properties of the plan.

According to growers, Indica strains are typically smaller plants with higher scents and denser buds that flower at a faster pace than the Sativa strain.  Sativa strains are typically larger but less dense plants.  The buds or flowers of the Sativa strain is less aromatic and takes longer to emerge than Indica.  Another well-known product is Sinsemilla which is a potent marijuana that is derived from female hemp plant.  This is derived from plants that are unfertilized and seedless and specifically grown to produce the Sinsemilla strain of marijuana.

The most popular strains of marijuana include:

  • Aurora Indica
  • Afghan
  • Big Bud
  • Blue Mystic

No matter by which name it is called marijuana is classified as a schedule I drug by the Food and Drug Administration. Marijuana is a highly controversial drug and advocates are fighting to change the classification and achieve greater legal status for this substance.  In the meantime, various studies are being conducted to determine the risks associated with the use of this drug and to bring greater public awareness overall.
